Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben
behütet und getröstet wunderbar, –
so will ich diese Tage mit euch leben
und mit euch gehen in ein neues Jahr;

noch will das alte unsre Herzen quälen,
noch drückt uns böser Tage schwere Last,
Ach Herr, gib unsern aufgeschreckten Seelen
das Heil, für das Du uns geschaffen hast.

Und reichst Du uns den schweren Kelch, den bittern,
des Leids, gefüllt bis an den höchsten Rand,
so nehmen wir ihn dankbar ohne Zittern
aus Deiner guten und geliebten Hand.

Doch willst Du uns noch einmal Freude schenken
an dieser Welt und ihrer Sonne Glanz,
dann woll'n wir des Vergangenen gedenken,
und dann gehört Dir unser Leben ganz.

Laß warm und hell die Kerzen heute flammen,
die Du in unsre Dunkelheit gebracht,
führ, wenn es sein kann, wieder uns zusammen!
Wir wissen es, Dein Licht scheint in der Nacht.

Wenn sich die Stille nun tief um uns breitet,
so laß uns hören jenen vollen Klang
der Welt, die unsichtbar sich um uns weitet,
all Deiner Kinder hohen Lobgesang.

Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen
erwarten wir getrost, was kommen mag.
Gott ist bei uns am Abend und am Morgen,
und ganz gewiß an jedem neuen Tag.

Surrounded faithfully by gracious powers,
so wondrously kept safe, consoled, and stilled –
I want to live these days here at your side,
and go with you into a new-born year.

The old still means to weigh upon our hearts,
still evil days lie heavy on our souls;
O Lord, grant to our startled, frightened spirits
the healing for which you have shaped our lives.

And should you hand us now the bitter chalice,
the cup of suffering, filled up to the brim,
we shall receive it thankfully, unshaking,
out of your good and well-beloved hand.

But should you wish to give us joy once more
in this our world, and in its sunlight's shining,
then we will call to mind what we have lived through,
and all our life shall wholly then be yours.

Let candles burn tonight, now warm and shining,
which you have brought into our darkened world;
bring us, if it be possible, together!
We know it well: your light shines through the night.

And when a deep and total silence settles,
then let us hear the fullness of that sound,
the world which spreads unseen and all around us,
the lofty, praising song of all your children.

By gracious powers so wonderfully shielded,
we wait with confidence, come what may.
God is with us each evening and each morning,
and surely on every new day still to come.
